K - 12 Program
- Mission is to develop an ongoing interactive involvement among elementary students, junior high students, high school students, teachers and our SHPE members.
- This partnership is geared to assist school teachers in teaching their students the importance of pursuing a higher education.
- SHPE- Phoenix coordinates the presentations with the teacher so that some of what the students are learning can be incorporated into the presentation.
- SHPE volunteers rotate their time to instruct on a periodic basis amongst these schools, generally every 2-3 weeks. The volunteers provide each class they visit with a different perspective on the fields of Math, Science and Engineering never losing the intent of this program which is to encourage them to pursue a higher education
- Also included in this program is a Parent Awareness Night targeted to involve the student’s parents in the educational process. The plans for the Parent Awareness Night is to have a teacher or a school official give a talk about the importance of planning for their child’s next level of education.
- The schools which have accepted to endeavor in a partnership with the Greater Phoenix SHPE chapter are, Esperanza Elementary in Phoenix, Nevitt Elementary in Tempe and Rose Linda Elementary in Phoenix. These schools have a student body consisting in the most part of Hispanic students.
Scholarship and MentorSHPE
- SHPE-Phoenix names their scholarship program after one of our founding fathers, Jose Melero, who recently passed away. His commitment to help Hispanic youth succeed in their academic endeavors epitomizes our scholarship program.
- Mission is to award scholarships to high school seniors and college underclassmen for their educational advancement at Arizona Colleges and Universities.
- Along with a financial award, we pair a SHPE-Phoenix professional member with every recipient to serve as a mentor throughout their college career.
- Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following criteria: Expressed interest and imagination for engineering and applied sciences, good attendance and behavior in the classroom, financial need, good academic standing and referral from a high school counselor.
- Currently have 13 Jose Melero scholars attending Colleges and Universities from which 4 have already done summer internships with their mentor’s company.
- It is SHPE-Phoenix goal this year to award 10 scholarships with their respective mentors.
- More information on the Jose Melero Scholarship is available.
NetDay
- The mission of this program is to make internet-ready underprivileged local elementary, junior high, or high schools that currently have no access to computers and the world wide web.

- Then, installation of the required hardware and software, as well as training for teachers and staff on how to use the software and obtaining access to the internet.
